The benefits of joining a black greek-letter organization

I have been an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. since my initiation in 2004. I attempt to attend as many conferences as economically feasibly. As a result, usually, I have some type of paraphernalia in my possession, whether it is a bag or an ink pen, that identifies me as a member of the sorority.

This insignia readily identifies me as a member of of the first and finest. On occasion, when I am seen with my sorority letters visible, I am approached with questions about Alpha Kappa Alpha. But one of the questions that has stuck in my mind is “What are the benefits of membership in a black greek letter organization?” After pondering this question for awhile, I have come up with these answers which I will elaborate on in upcoming blog posts.

I have read all of the posts you list on the benefits of a joining a black greek letter organization. However, I noticed that they were not unique to BGLOs – meaning that these benefits are not unique to BGLOs. In your opinion, are there any unique benefits? In other words, what can a BGLO offer me that no other organization/society can?

The benefits may not be unique to BGLOs, but in my humble opinion, I do think that they are a little easier to access once you are in one of these great organizations, especially the networking part.

I will say this, the member benefits series is still not complete, and I admit that I didn’t originally write the series with a focus on unique benefits. Instead, it was just to let people know in general what the benefits of BGLO membership is. There are so many people who don’t understand that these organizations do have a purpose.

With that in mind, thanks for commenting as I will definitely take into consideration “unique benefits” as I continue writing the series. Please check back to see if anything I write piques your interest. I hope I have answered your question.
